How did we make our choice?

The treadmill is undoubtedly, in addition to the exercise bike or the elliptical trainer , one of the most popular home fitness equipment. Indeed, it brings the benefits of running by allowing you to control every detail (speed, incline, ventilation…) without submitting to sometimes unfavorable weather conditions.

The difficulty is that there are many on the market. It is therefore necessary to determine the essential criteria before purchasing one of these models:

  • Dimensions : The advantage of a small treadmill is that it takes up less space in a room. But the best thing is a large mat to provide enough space for a comfortable run. For a large size, a surface of 1.20m long and 60cm wide does the trick, and the use becomes less risky. Also, we appreciate that a model is foldable and has wheels to facilitate its movement and storage.
  • Maximum speed : the belt motor determines this criterion as well as the silent nature of the machine. Note that even if, at the time of purchase, you are not a great athlete, the idea is to improve yourself and gradually increase your running speed so you have to allow a margin compared to your usual pace. The belts going from 1 to 20 km / h are the most interesting and they have a better life.
  • Features : Often, these devices offer a variety of training programs and sometimes even user profiles for more personalized sessions. By targeting your goals, you find programming that is more suitable to you and to your level. For the rest, you get the information (speed, duration, distance, heart rate, calories lost…) on a screen and / or via a compatible application.
  • Accessories : the higher you go in the price range, the more accessories there are that accompany the mat. You can find a chest belt to calculate your heart rate, speakers to listen to music, a bottle holder, a support for smartphones / tablets / MP3, bars for your hands or a towel, a ventilator …

After an initial overview of around twenty models, 16 drew our attention for their reputation and performance. We therefore examined the criteria mentioned above through the analysis of various user feedback, English and French side (blogs, sales sites, forums, expert opinions…).

This allowed us to isolate the 4 best treadmills of the moment.
